For over a half-century, Powers and Sons has produced pitman arms for the automotive industry. Our line ranges from relatively light parts for passenger cars and light trucks to massive class 8 heavy truck arms.
Our Pitman Arm Line
The purpose of the pitman arm is to act as a lever, converting the rotary motion of the steering gear sector shaft into linear motion for the steering linkage. The attachment to the sector shaft may be through a tapered spline or using a straight spline with a pinch bolt. We produce both. The attachment to the steering linkage may be through a simple tapered hole in a boss or through a ball joint housed in the arm. Again, Powers and Sons produces both.
Low Cost and Integrity
While the pitman arm is a relatively straightforward looking part, it plays a vital role in the steering system. We fully understand and respect this product line. We respect it for what could go wrong. If it breaks, all steering control will be lost. To ensure consistent performance, Powers and Sons heat-treats all pitman arms. Our pitman arms are 100% magnafluxed after heat treatment to insure against longitudinal cracks, which could affect strength. They are also 100% Brinnel checked for hardness.
We regularly work with the steering gear supplier to make certain the pitman arm will attach properly to the sector shaft.
